Speed - The [Awesome] Ride

Finally, after all these years, I had the opportunity to experience Speed - The Ride...and what an awesome ride it was!

Speed - The Ride is the roller coaster at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas.  This roller coaster is like no other.  You're seated; your restraints are checked; you're waiting...waiting...waiting.  Suddenly, you're instantly catapulted to 70 mph!  Unlike other roller coasters, there's no crawl up the steep incline with the click-click-click sounds while you mentally prepare for the fun part.  This one starts out 100% adrenaline and just doesn't stop until the end.

The cars are loaded from inside the hotel.  When the green flag drops, you shoot out of the "garage" and go through a few twists and turns before coming to the loop.  A few more twists and turns and you're suddenly looking stright up while the cars slow to a halt.  Then, just as the cars start slowly falling, you realize you're going to do it all over again - backwards!

The ride only lasts about 30 seconds, but it's the most fun 30 seconds of any roller coaster I've ever been on.  It seemed like everyone was screaming.  For me, a reluctant smile is a sign of extreme enjoyment (I'm not the most expressive person), but I have to admit that I was laughing out loud from the first split-second of this ride.

I've seen and done a lot of things since I was first introduced to Vegas in 1976, and I won't hesistate to recommend Speed - The Ride.  The cost is only $10, but I would suggest getting the all-day attractions ride pass for Speed - The Ride and the Cyber Speedway, a NASCAR simulator race, for only $22.95.  You will want to do them again!

Vegas shows are great, but if I had a choice of Speed - The Ride or paying $150 for any other Vegas show, I'd take Speed - The Ride in a heartbeat.  Bottom line: When you're in Vegas, you gotta do this one!
