Leave Lohan Alone

Categories: Opinion

Lindsey Lohan has been sentenced to 90 days in jail (story).

This is what our government does to fight crime.

A criminal is the person who takes a gun, sticks it in your face, and says "Give me your money."  Lindsey Lohan is not a criminal.  Nor was Paris Hilton when she was sent to jail.

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_pri-crime-prisoners).  California Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel's decision to incarcerate Lohan is yet another example of why.  I believe our governments are bigger, more threatening criminals than Lohan.  "Do exactly as we tell you and no one will get hurt."  The government seems to treat everyone who doesn't cooperate as a criminal.  Personally, I believe defiance is an admirable quality.  I don't know that Lohan has been defiant, but I certainly don't see her as such a threat to society that she needs to be locked up.

To Judge Revel: Leave this girl alone.  She's doing a fine job of destroying her life all on her own!  Try focusing on real crime.

Today, there's a new story about Lohan's fingernail message.  Apparently, if you look at one of her fingernails under a loupe, you can see what some argue is an offensive message.  Some believe this message was directed at the court; others argue it's directed at the paparazzi.

According to this story, the issue "could spell more jail time on top of [Lohan's] three-month sentence".  Don't you see something terribly wrong with this?  It's a tiny little message written on one little fingernail.  The only people who would see it are those who view super hi-res images posted on the Internet.  Who cares what's written on her fingernail, or who it's directed to?!  If you are so sensitive and so offended by these two little words, then you cannot survive in a society that supposedly stands for freedom of speeach.

I read comments posted by FoxNews.com visitors who scream that Lohan shouldn't be above the law, and she should go to jail because "she's a spoiled bratt" [sic].  No one should be above the law.  The problem is that the government is putting more and more people in jail for reasons that cannot be justified in a free society.  Aye, and there's the rub!  Americans no longer live in a free society.  America has become the most over-legislated nation in history!  We are trying to squeeze more and more from our citizens, and when a society is put under such pressure from the government, bad things happen.

This used to be America - a country where we had the freedom to express the things Lohan is being accused of expressing.  But most of us didn't express those things out loud.  For those who did express themselves openly, they were frowned upon.  But we didn't put them in jail or add to an existing sentence.

Lindsey Lohan is not a threat to society.  There are much, much, much bigger fish to fry.
