Guide to Celebrities in Las Vegas

Categories: Entertainment

March 5, 2015

Tony (last name unknown) as Freddy Kreuger from Nightmare on Elm Street poses with Las Vegas visitor Brenda-Jo Hubbard of Boston in May 2013.  Photo courtesy Ms. Hubbard.
Here's my official 2015 list of some of the biggest celebrities you might see on the Las Vegas Strip this year, and where you might find them.

The list has been significantly reduced over the past couple of years, probably as the result of new ordinances imposed by the Las Vegas City Council and Clark County Commission, under pressure from the hotels and casinos, intended to discourage street performers and vendors.  On the bright side, we no longer see the drunk Donald Ducks we used to.

The list is sorted by the "last seen" date, then by name.

Insider tip: Word on the street is that one or more of these is an impersonator.

Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story) - Usually seen with Sheriff Woody.  Last seen: 1) Cabo Wabo Cantina, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) In front of Forum Shops, 3500 S Las Vegas Blvd, Strip entrance; 3) Under the pedestrian bridge from MGM Grand, 3799 Las Vegas Blvd S, to New York-New York, 3790 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Captain Jack Sparrow
Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean) - There have been several Captain Jacks over the past few years, but the number one celebrity for 2013 never came out of character - he WAS Captain Jack Sparrow.  Sadly, I haven't seen him this year.  But another good Captain Jack is still out there, and he's good for a photo, but don't count on being entertained.  Last seen: In front of the Denny's restaurant, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Chewbacca (Wookie from Star Wars) - There have been as many as three in the past.  There are now two that I know of - one average height and the other tall (although he would be average by Wookie standards).  Last seen: 1) Tall: In front of Lake Bellagio, near the south end; 2) Average: On the Cosmopolitan side of the pedestrian bridge between Cosmo and Harmon Center/Planet Hollywood.
Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty - A favorite among the kids.  There are several (pictured is the best).  The stripper Miss Kitty we saw a few years ago seems to be gone.  Last seen: In front of Cabo Wabo Cantina, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Imperial Stormtroopers
Imperial Stormtroopers (Star Wars) - There are still quite a few Stormtroopers this year, often working together.  There are different colors, too - white, black, gold, pink, aqua, army green, camouflage.  Last seen: Patrolling in front of the Miracle Mile Shops.  Could be anywhere.  There's usually at least one with Darth Vader, sometimes on the pedestrian bridge between Cosmopolitan and City Center.
Incredible Hulk (The Incredible Hulk comics)  Last seen: In front of Cabo Wabo Cantina, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Minions (Minions movie) - I don't know what these things are, but they seem to be multiplying!  Where there's one, you'll probably find several others.  They don't do anything but bounce up and down and mumble in funny voices, but people seem to like 'em.  Last seen: 1) Lake Bellagio, south end, 3600 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) Hexx, 3655 Las Vegas Blvd S; 3) In between the two Strip entrances to the Miracle Mile Shops, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Minnie Mouse
Minnie Mouse - Good photo op for the kids.  There are several, sometimes within a few yards of each other.  Often working with Mickey.  Last seen: 1) Hexx, 3655 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) Under the pedestrian bridge from MGM Grand, 3799 Las Vegas Blvd S, to New York-New York, 3790 Las Vegas Blvd S; 3) Sidewalk near south entrance to Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd S; 4) Carnival Court, 3475 Las Vegas Blvd S; 5) South entrance to the Flamingo (pictured).
Olaf
Olaf (Frozen movie) - Olaf broke the record for the most sightings in a single day (7).  The Strip is saturated with Olafs (Olavs?).  Last seen: 1) Denny's, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) Coca-Cola Store, 3785 Las Vegas Blvd S; 3) Between Paris, 3655 Las Vegas Blvd S, and Cabo Wabo Cantina, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S; 4) McDonald's, 3475 Las Vegas Blvd S, and Panda Express, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd S; 5) Sidewalk near south entrance to Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd S; 6) Northwest entrance to Miracle Mile Shops, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S; 7) West end of the Linq, 3535 Las Vegas Blvd S (Strip sidewalk between Flamingo and Quad hotels)
Sheriff Woody (Toy Story) - Usually seen with Buzz Lightyear.
Thor - You'll have to Google this one.  I don't know him (I was never into superheroes).  Last seen: In front of Cabo Wabo Cantina, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Tony 'Scarface' Montana - Looks like the scar was drawn on with lipstick.  Last seen: Near the northwest Strip entrance to the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, 3667 Las Vegas Blvd S.
War Machine (Marvel Comics) - This character looks like he lost the war.  But I gotta admit...he looks like someone you would not want to mess with.  Last seen: Walking in front of Paris Las Vegas.
Zach Galifianakis (as Alan Garner from The Hangover movie) - There are several, each with a baby strapped to his chest.  Last seen: 1) Most often with a tiger (and recently with a giraffe, in addition to the tiger) in front of the Denny's restaurant, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) Near the northwest entrance to the Miracle Mile Shops, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S, next to Cabo Wabo Cantina.
Luigi (Mario Bros. video games) - Usually works with Mario.   Last seen: In front of the Showcase Mall, 3785 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Mario
Mario (Mario Bros. video games)  Last seen: In front of the Miracle Mile Shops, then later on the pedestrian bridge near Harmon Center.
Mario and Luigi (Mario Bros. video games)  Last seen: Showcase Mall, 3785 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Michael Jackson - Only one left that I know of. He has the basic appearance of Michael, but doesn't have the moves (but then again, who does?).  Last seen: In front of the Coca-Cola store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard.
Wonder Woman - Over the years, there have been really good and really bad Wonder Womans (Wonder Women?).  I saw her for the first time this year, and the 2015 version looked pretty good, wearing a nice, new costume.  Last seen: In front of Cabo Wabo Cantina, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Bumblebee
Bumblebee (Transformers) - Popular character with Transformers fans. There are other Transformers out there, but Bumblebee is the most popular.  Last seen: 1) Denny's, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) Sidewalk near south entrance to Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd S; 3) Carnival Court, 3475 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Darth Vader (Star Wars) - There are a couple.  Often seen with a Stormtrooper or Wookie.  Last seen: On the Cosmopolitan side of the pedestrian bridge from Cosmo to Harmon Center/Planet Hollywood.
Mickey and Minnie Mouse
Mickey and Minnie Mouse (Disney)  Last seen: 1) Sidewalk near south entrance to Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) Carnival Court, 3475 Las Vegas Blvd S; 3) South entrance to the Flamingo (pictured).
Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse - Good photo op for the kids.  There are several, sometimes within a few yards of each other.  Often working with Minnie.  Last seen: 1) Hexx, 3655 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) Under the pedestrian bridge from MGM Grand, 3799 Las Vegas Blvd S, to New York-New York, 3790 Las Vegas Blvd S; 3) Sidewalk near south entrance to Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd S; 4) Carnival Court, 3475 Las Vegas Blvd S; 5) South entrance to the Flamingo; 6) in between Miracle Mile Shops entrances.
Pee Wee Herman
Pee Wee Herman - Okay, to be clear, this is not the real Pee Wee Herman. But you can book this guy for your parties. Visit iampeewee.com, or call Drew at (702) 530-4396.  Last seen: On the Flamingo side of the elevator leading to the pedestrian bridge from the Cromwell to Caesars Palace.
Spiderman - There are several, most of which look like overgrown children wearing Spiderman pajamas.  Last seen: 1) In front of Caesars Palace, 3570 S Las Vegas Blvd; 2) In front of Lake Bellagio, south end, 3600 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime (Transformers) - There are several.  Last seen: 1) On the Cosmopolitan side of the pedestrian bridge from Cosmo to Harmon Center/Planet Hollywood (pictured); 2) Carnival Court, 3475 Las Vegas Blvd S; 3) Sidewalk near south entrance to Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Dora the Explorer
Dora the Explorer (cartoon)  Last seen: In front of Lake Bellagio, south end, 3600 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Elmo (Sesame Street) - Great for kids, but I witnessed a mother begging him to stop drinking a beer in front of children in June 2013.  "It's Vegas!" he replied as he continued sucking his bottle.  Last seen: 1) Today, at the entrance to the Linq, 3535 Las Vegas Blvd S (Strip sidewalk between Flamingo and Quad hotels); 2) Yesterday, in front of the Cromwell, 3595 Las Vegas Blvd S.
KISS (fully-costumed)  Last seen: In front of the Hard Rock Café, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Tinker Bell
Tinker Bell (Peter Pan) - Good for children and Disney fans.  Very friendly and cooperative.  Last seen: In between the two Miracle Mile Shops Strip entrances (but she said she was going to try moving to an area where there's shade).
Batman (Batman TV series)  Last seen: Under the pedestrian bridge from MGM Grand, 3799 Las Vegas Blvd S, to New York-New York, 3790 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Batman (Batman movie series) - Max has a temper.  Avoid him.  Last seen: In front of Denny's, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Elvis - None resemble Elvis.  Very few of them sing.  Last seen: Too many to count and keep track of.
Iron Man
Iron Man - He stands there.  If you're lucky, he might wave.  Last seen: 1) Denny's, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) Under the pedestrian bridge from MGM Grand, 3799 Las Vegas Blvd S, to New York-New York, 3790 Las Vegas Blvd S.
KISS (in thongs) - If you really wanna see KISS impersonators wearing nothing but a thong...   Last seen: Today, it seems the nearly naked KISSers were bumped from their usual spot in front of the Hard Rock Café, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S.  Around noon, six KISS members were there while Metro officers (police) sorted out a dispute.  The four in full costume remained while the two in thongs (one wearing a robe) walked away.  (Hopefully, they won't be back.)
SpongeBob SquarePants
SpongeBob SquarePants (cartoon)  Last seen: 1) Denny's, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S; 2) In front of the Cromwell, 3595 Las Vegas Blvd S (pictured).
Chucky (Child's Play movie)  Last seen: Sitting on the wall in front of the Strip entrance to the Forum Shops, 3500 Las Vegas Blvd S, at Caesars Palace.
Marilyn Monroe  Last seen: Most recently, near Planet Hollywood. In the past, seen standing on the grating in front of the Flamingo Hotel with the air blowing her dress up, a la The Seven Year Itch.
Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland) - Great for Johnny Depp fans. Often seen with Willy Wonka.  Last seen: Best bet would be in front of the Denny's restaurant on the Strip at MGM (next to the Hard Rock Café).
Superman - Superman (Michael Duran) has moved downtown.  Last seen: Fremont Street.
Captain America - Sometimes works with other superheros.  Last seen: 1) Under the pedestrian bridge between MGM Grand and New York-New York; 2) In front of Cabo Wabo Cantina, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Edward Scissorshand (Edward Scissorshand) - Another great one for Johnny Depp fans!  Last seen: Best bet would be in front of the Denny's restaurant on the Strip at MGM (next to the Hard Rock Café).
Willy Wonka (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory) - Another excellent character for Johnny Depp fans. Often works with The Mad Hatter.  Last seen: Best bet would be in front of the Denny's restaurant on the Strip at MGM (next to the Hard Rock Café).

Some tips on finding these celebrities:

  • The Strip runs north/south.  In the afternoon, the east side of the Strip gets the sun while the west side is shaded by the hotels and CityCenter.  The east side also has smaller, more affordable shops, which makes it more attractive to pedestrians.  Despite the heat, more people walk on the sunny, east side, so more celebrities hang out on that side, too.
  • The celebrities that children might be more interested in are usually found near the Coca-Cola/Gameworks/M&M World complex just north of the MGM Grand Hotel (at Tropicana Ave.).
  • Although there are exceptions, you generally won't find celebrities farther north than Harrah's.  Here's a list of the hotels and businesses the celebrities usually work near (I call it "celebrity stretch"):
    • Bellagio (in front of Lake Bellagio on the south end, at Bellagio Drive)
    • Planet Hollywood / Miracle Mile Shops (northwest entrance)
    • Hard Rock Café (the new one on the Strip)
    • Denny's (next to the Hard Rock Café)
    • Coca-Cola Store (Showcase Mall)
  • Click the image, right, to see the larger map.  The red areas are where you'll most likely find celebrities.

Here's a list of some celebrities that haven't been seen on the Strip for a while:

Bart Simpson (TV's The Simpsons)
Betelgeuse (Movie Beetlejuice)
Big Bird (TV's Sesame Street)
Catwoman
Charlie Chaplin
Cookie Monster (Sesame Street)
David Bowie
Freddy Kreuger (Nightmare on Elm Street)
Garfield
Gene Simmons (KISS)
Grinch
Homer Simpson (TV's The Simpsons)
Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark series)
Jake Sully (as a Na'vi-human hybrid, Avatar)
Joker (Batman TV and movie series)
Kasumi (Dead or Alive video game)
Luke Skywalker (Star Wars)
Marie Antoinette
Neytiri (a Na'vi, Avatar)
Peter Griffin (TV's Family Guy)
Princess Leia Organa (Star Wars)
R2-D2 (Star Wars)
Shrek
Sonic (The Hedgehog)
Spiderman (black costume)
Tom & Jerry
Winnie the Pooh
Yoda (Star Wars)

Many of the celebrities that used to appear on the Strip have moved downtown - maybe because they have more success, or maybe because the Clark County Commission, which controls the Strip, is so oppressive.  You can find those migrants and even more celebrities on Fremont Street.

Finally, in addition to these celebrities, you may also find a few street performers worthy of attention.  Most are talentless, but some are very impressive.

Guitarist Charles Rangel performing on the Strip in Las Vegas.
Guitarist Charles Rangel performs in front of Bally's on the Strip in Las Vegas.
I'm planning a page of street performers worth watching, but only have three candidates so far: 1) Julia, the Piano-playing Robot, 2) Larry "The Crooner", and 3) guitarist Charles Rangel, who doesn't live in Vegas, but visits occasionally.

Criss Angel was working the streets just a few years ago.  Now he has his own show at the Luxor Hotel.  So you never know what kind of talent you can find on the Strip.

If you're going to any of the hotels, restaurants, or shops on the south Strip (but north of Tropicana Avenue), I would always recommend walking - day or night.

Jonas - Sep 23, 2010 12:01:01 — I've seen even more imposters recently. For example, there's a new Superman, but his muscles are foam rubber. This is NOT the real Superman I wrote about above. There are other imposters, too. It seems like everyone who had a Halloween costume left over from last year decided they would make a car ...more

Jonas - Oct 14, 2010 01:41:49 — I haven't seen the real one in a while, but I saw the other one this past weekend.  Usually, he's on a stretch on the east side of the street somewhere between Paris on the north and MGM Grand on the south.  Sometimes these characters work in front of the fountains of Bellagio, which is on ...more

Jonas - Dec 3, 2010 02:49:22 —

Good question.  Yes, they're almost always on the public sidewalks, but sometimes it's hard to determine what the public sidewalk is.  The area surrounding the Carnival Court at Harrah's is a good example.  Apparently, the sidewalk is privately owned and the owners ren ...more

Jonas - Mar 12, 2011 10:13:12 — Steph, if you're still out there, Cap'n Jack was on the south end of the Strip near the Gameworks/Coca-Cola/M&M places today. Spring break's comin' up! ;)

Jonas - Jun 29, 2011 01:46:56 — As far as I know they are all independent contractors, and there are no agencies that represent them (yet). The only way I know of (to contact them) is to walk up and down the Strip until you find them (but, if you haven't already done so, check your email for an alternative that I'm not willing to ...more

Jonas - Jul 19, 2012 11:34:45 — I need to update the list for this year (2012). Suffice it to say that there are at least four of each now. Some of the very best are still around. Freddy Kreuger is still the best. I've seen 'Superman' a few times, but he was off duty (I think he's fed up with the government opposition). Captain ...more

Jonas - May 21, 2013 03:13:17 — Yes, that's Tony, an actor from Argentina. The elevator is outside of the south end of the Flamingo Hotel going up to the pedestrian bridge. Brenda-jo - Jun 18, 2013 10:24:09 — Jonas, I'm speechless.. Thank you for capturing the moment and everything Tony stood for. His mask is a legend….. Even looks better than the real nightmare on Elm Street costum[e] in the catalogs. Love that talented Man! I wish He could see this!
Jonas - Jun 19, 2013 04:59:30 — Thank you!
born and raised - Feb 18, 2014 01:13:46 — I get Elvis being on the strip. What i don't like and think makes Vegas strip look tacky are all of the other costumes. Example, woody and buzz lightyear have nothing to do with the Vegas scene.
Jonas - Feb 18, 2014 02:52:02 — I agree with you, "born and raised".  But there's a bigger picture, from my POV.  What's been happening over the past decade or so, as you probably already know, is a battle between the government and the street performers who believe they have the right to sit down on the Strip  ...more
Jonas - Oct 15, 2014 09:18:05 — Sadly, most of these celebrities have disappeared, thanks to the oppressive Clark County Commissioners, lead by Chris Giunchigliani and Mary Beth Scow, and the hotels/casinos who believe they're losing revenue as a result of tips given to street performers.
