Guide to Celebrities in Las Vegas

Here's my official list of some of the biggest celebrities seen on the streets of Las Vegas this year (2010), where you might find them, and my grade (A to F).

Name Comments Grade
Superman He gets around.  Although this Superman will come out of character to carry on a conversation, in a sense, he stays in character because he's as polite and charming as you would expect Superman to be.  One of the Strip's very best. A+
Freddy Kreuger
(Nightmare on Elm Street)
This is one of the very best - and he's willing to work for his photos!  Seen most often near the Gameworks and M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard, and near the new Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip. A+
Captain Jack Sparrow
(Pirates of the Caribbean)
There are two - one is an imposter; the other (the tall one) never comes out of character - he IS Jack Sparrow.  He's got a great sense of humor, too.  Seen in various locations including Paris Las Vegas, Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, and near the Gameworks and M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. B for the imposter; A+ for the real deal
The Mad Hatter
(Alice in Wonderland)
Seen only occasionally (and, sorry, but I don't remember where I saw him).  But if you're lucky enough to stumble across him, get a photo - he's worth it! (And don't forget to tip.) A
Hello Kitty A favorite among the kids.  Seen most often in front of the Denny's Restaurant next to the new Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip. A
Spiderman There are several - only one of which is impressive.  He was seen on Tuesday, August 12, 2010 in front of the Denny's Restaurant next to the new Hard Rock Cafe on Las Vegas Boulevard just north of Tropicana Boulevard.  The others look more like overgrown children wearing Spiderman pajamas.  A little more effort in the costume department would help.  The worst - a barrel-chested imposter - is seen most often near the M&M Store on the Las Vegas Boulevard just north of Tropicana Boulevard.  The best is not much better - younger and a bit more impressive - but he comes out of character too much (mostly, I'm sure, because it's hot as Hades out there). A for the real one; C to D for the imposters
Mickey and Minnie Mouse Good photo op for the kids.  Seen only occasionally near the M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. A-
Imperial Stormtrooper
(Star Wars)
Looks real, but he drags a dead R2-D2 around with him.  Okay for snapshots. A-
Batman Varies, but I usually see him at night near the fountains at Bellagio (I think he lives in the belfry there). B+
Winnie the Pooh Another great one for kids.  Seen only occasionally near the M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. B+
Edward Cullen
(Twilight)
Very tall.  Could be found anywhere, usually at night. B+
Jake Sully
(as a Na'vi-human hybrid, Avatar)
Seen only once - early 2010 - near Paris Las Vegas. B+
Neytiri
(a Na'vi, Avatar)
Seen only once - early 2010 - near Paris Las Vegas. B+
Charlie Chaplin Here's a new one (August 11, 2010).  He works the crowd, as one would expect Chaplin to do.  Last seen waddling southbound in front of the M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. B
Garfield Another great one for kids and cat lovers.  Seen only occasionally near the Gameworks and M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. B
Smurf Another great one for kids.  Seen only occasionally near the Gameworks and M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. B
Elmo Great for kids.  Seen only occasionally near the M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. B
Buzz Lightyear
(Toy Story)
He has boobs, but the kids probably won't notice.  Always seen with Sheriff Woody, most often near the Gameworks and M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard, and near the new Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip. B-
Sheriff Woody
(Toy Story)
Like Buzz (above), he has boobs, but the kids probably won't notice.  Always seen with Commander Buzz Lightyear, most often near the Gameworks and M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard, and near the new Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip. B-
Mario and Luigi
(Mario Bros. video games)
Points deducted just 'cause they're so darn annoying - "'eyyyyyyyyyyy!"  Seen most often near the Coca-cola Store, Gameworks, and M&M store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. B-
Michael Jackson Several; one seen only occasionally near the M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard; the others were seen walking near the fountains at Bellagio and in front of Paris Las Vegas.  Some have the basic appearance of Michael, but none have the moves.  The grades vary depending on which one you find. B to D
SpongeBob SquarePants This one's funny, but he'll moon you if you don't tip him!  Seen most often near the M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. C
Indiana Jones
(Raiders of the Lost Ark, et. al.)
Seen only a few times in front of Paris Las Vegas. C
Wonder Woman The good news: She's more attractive than I ever thought Lynda Carter was.  The bad news: She's got to buy some all-nude pantyhose!  That alone brings her grade down two places.  Otherwise, nice costume, nice smile.  Seen occasionally near the Coca-cola Store, Gameworks, and M&M store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. C
Homer Simpson
(TV's The Simpsons)
"Doh!" Last seen in front of the Harley-Davidson Cafe on Las Vegas Boulevard at Harmon (across from CityCenter) (8/13/2010). C
Elvis Too many to count and keep track of.  None of them resemble Elvis.  But if you want to hear a good Elvis singing live, go see "Big Elvis" at Bill's Gambling Hall and Saloon on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Boulevard. C-
Darth Vader
(Star Wars)
He's a little skinny guy, not at all big and menacing.  But if you're a short Star Wars fan, get the photo.  Seen wherever there's evil. C-
Gene Simmons
(KISS)
Hideous, but with the make-up and costume, nobody cares.  Location varies. C-
Marilyn Monroe Seen only once, standing on the grating in front of the Flamingo Hotel with the air blowing her dress up.  Good for a chuckle and snapshot if you're a Marilyn fan, but good luck finding her again. D
Shrek Okay for little Shrek fans, but 1) his rubber mask flops around and 2) he likes to scare people as they pass by.  Seen occasionally near the Coca-cola Store, Gameworks, and M&M store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. D
Iron Man Okay for Iron Man fans, if there are any, but he does nothing to earn his tips.  Seen most often near the Gameworks and M&M Store on the Strip just north of Tropicana Boulevard. D-
David Bowie Could be anywhere (but trust me, you don't want to see this guy!). F
R2-D2
(Star Wars)
Dead - but what the hay - it's for still photographs, right?  Always found very close to the Imperial Stormtrooper (above). F
Catwoman Not even close.  Never stops long enough to groom herself.  She behaves more like a real cat than a celebrity impersonator. F

Insider tip: Word on the street is that one or more of these is an impersonator.
