'You Make Me Feel Brand New' by Simply Red

Categories: Music

One August 2010 day, I was walking along the Strip in Las Vegas and heard some live music coming from the back of the Hawaiian Marketplace across from the new CityCenter.  I recognized the singers - Randy Hall and Joe Esposito, collectively known as "Cool Change" - they perform there regularly doing Motown-type hits.  But I had never taken the time to sit down and listen.  Since summer was drawing to a close, I decided to "stop and smell the roses" - to sit and enjoy a bit of the music I grew up listening to in the '70s.

One of the songs performed was the 1974 Stylistics hit "You Make Me Feel Brand New".  As a musician, I (regrettably) never focused much on lyrics.  I remember this song and some of the lyrics, but up until that summer day, it was just another song from the past.  As I listened to Cool Change's performance, I was able to focus more on the lyrics, and I realized that the message being delivered was very much like my feelings toward my wife.

When I got home, I went online to find the lyrics so I could read every word and better understand the song.  I searched for videos so I could listen again to the original, and I stumbled across this live concert video performed by Simply Red.  I remember this band from their 1986 hit "Holding Back the Years", but other than that song, I didn't know anything about the band.  Out of curiosity, I watched this video and listened carefully to Simply Red's interpretation.  What caught my attention most was that this was being sung by only one person, lead singer Mick Hucknall.  Due to the extensive vocal range required, The Stylistics had used two singers.  I was impressed by the range of Hucknall, and Simply Red's version captured my heart, enough for me to want to share it with others.

"A beautiful thing never gives so much pain as does failing to hear and see it."

— Michelangelo

I hope you enjoy Simply Red's version of "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and Mick Hucknall's extraordinary vocal capabilities as much as I do.

You Make Me Feel Brand New
by Linda Creed and Thom Bell
(as performed by Simply Red)

My love,
I'll never find the words, my love
To tell you how I feel, my love
Mere words could not explain

Precious love,
you held my life within your hands
Created everything I am
Taught me how to live again

Only you cared when I needed a friend
Believed in me through thick and thin
This song is for you
Filled with gratitude and love

God bless you
You make me feel brand new
For God blessed me with you
You make me feel brand new
I sing this song 'cause you
Make me feel brand new

My love,
whenever I was insecure
You built me up and made me sure
You gave my pride back to me

Precious friend,
with you I'll always have a friend
You're someone whom I can depend
To walk a path that sometimes bends

Without you, life has no meaning or rhyme
Like notes to a song out of time
How can I repay
You for havin' faith in me?

God bless you
You make me feel brand new
For God blessed me with you
You make me feel brand new
I sing this song 'cause you

You're makin' me feel so brand new
So brand new
You make me feel brand new
God has blessed me with you
Make me feel brand new

Evan - Dec 6, 2014 10:11:13 — We share the same sentiments. Mick Hucknall's vocal range is astounding. I'm a huge Simply Red Fan since the early nineties and I am lucky to have discovered their music early in my life.
