My Compliments to the Chef!

Categories: Opinion

For lunch today, I was eating a can of Chef Boyardee Spaghetti and Meatballs.  Okay, I wasn't really eating the can, I was eating the contents of the can.  Anyway, as I'm eating, it occurred to me that this particular bowl was exactly like every other bowl I've eaten for more than 50 years.  In other words, Chef Boyardee has produced a product that has remained amazingly consistent (and tasty) over the past five decades.  I think that's a remarkable achievement.

I've commented in the past how, when sales are not meeting expectations, executives tend to blame the product and they make changes that hurt more than they help.  Remember the "New Coca-Cola"?

Chef Boyardee hasn't done that.  They had a great product to start with, and it remains a great product today.

I discovered that the product is named after its founder, Italian-American immigrant Ettore "Hector" Boiardi, who decided to name his product "Boy-Ar-Dee" to help Americans properly pronounce his name.  Over the years, Boiardi's company had been sold several times, being acquired by ConAgra Foods in 2000.

ConAgra is one of North America's largest food packaging companies.  Headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, ConAgra has picked up names like Duncan-Hines, Banquet Foods, RJR Nabisco, Swiss Miss, Hunt's, Peter Pan, Jiffy Pop, Orville Redenbacher, and Slim Jim.
