Former Trooper Facing Criminal Charges

Categories: OpinionCrime

A former Texas trooper's dashcam and a highway traffic monitoring camera capture the trooper using excessive force on a handcuffed woman who, it appears, had done nothing wrong.

The video on shows Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper Arturo Perez slamming 23-year-old Whitney Fox into a concrete wall causing serious injuries to her chin, jaw, teeth, and psyche.

Some say they're shocked by this video.  What's shocking to me is that so many people are shocked by this video.  This is how the police work in America.

According to the report, Fox was driving a drunk friend home.  The friend grabbed the steering wheel of Fox's car, and caused her to run into a tollway wall.  When the car stopped, the friend reportedly fled, but he can be seen on the DPS traffic monitoring camera recording.  Fox called 9-1-1 for help, and Trooper Perez placed Fox under arrest for suspicion of drunk driving.

When Fox objects and asks why she's being arrested, the trooper tells her to "stop resisting".  This is a tactic police officers use to threaten anyone who objects to what the officers are doing.  Many who continue to object are subsequently slapped with an additional charge of "obstructing a police officer".  Fox wasn't that fortunate.  Instead, she had her face slammed into a concrete wall.

"I'm trying to get you to the car and you continue to resist," Perez tells Fox.  She clearly was not resisting in any way.  She does twist just before Perez's attack, but that twist appears to be due to the fact that she's wearing heels, not any attempt to resist.

Most people think this type of police violence is the exception, not the rule.  But what they don't seem to understand is that other law enforcement officers walk past these violent acts is if they're routine.  That's because they are.

You'll notice a second trooper who does exactly that in this video.  He does absolutely nothing to stop Perez.  He seems to make no effort to even try to calm Perez down.  He helps Fox up because he knows she's been hurt, and that Perez's attack wasn't necessary.  But it's just another day for these troopers and thousands more all across America.

"Within days of the incident, the head of DPS said he was going to fire Trooper Perez, but Perez abruptly resigned.  The former trooper is now charged with misdemeanor assault."

Some people defend cops like Perez saying that it's a difficult job.  No, it isn't.  Police work is like that of a pilot - 99% boredom and 1% sheer terror.  Pilots are trained to handle that 1% successfully and professionally.  There's no excuse for police officers not being able to do the same thing.

Dashcams are a good thing.  What we now need are more police officers who are willing to turn in their bad brothers.  Unfortunately, if that were to happen, we would have very few police officers left to get the job done.
