AP: Pennsylvania School Sued for Banning 'Boobies' Bracelets

Categories: Opinion

Published November 15, 2010 | Associated Press

A free-speech lawsuit is being filed against a Pennsylvania school district that bans the popular "I ♥ Boobies. Keep a Breast." bracelets.

The American Civil Liberties Union says the Easton Area School District ban violates students' First Amendment rights.

School officials call the rubber jewelry distracting and demeaning.  The ACLU says the bracelets are perhaps irreverent, but not indecent.

The bracelets are sold by a California nonprofit to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer organizations.

If you know me, even remotely, you'll know I support freedom.  That would certainly include free speech.  I would also support anyone's decision to stop supporting organizations that support this type of promotional activity.

I can think of other cases that deserve more attention from the ACLU than this one.  I think the solution is to make sure the "California nonprofit", the Keep A Breast Foundation, understands that they may be causing more harm than good, and that it would be in their best interest to stop using such inappropriate methods to raise funds for such an important cause.  If the Keep A Breast Foundation doesn't take this seriously, neither will I.

Read the story.
