Jad & Den Quintet Doing ELP's Trilogy

Okay, I'm not too hip on jazz.  I burned out on it as a music major in college (jazz musicians are sooooo much better than I am!).  But knowing Emerson, Lake and Palmer's music as well as I do, and the title track from their Trilogy album, I can appreciate what this group has done with it.  This is the Jad & Den Quintet recorded live at La Nouvelle Athenes in Paris.

stephen hawkins - Mar 23, 2011 12:44:07 — I have been a fan of ELP since Keith Emerson left the Nice and was very wary of this cover but on watching and hearing the performance, I think this is an awesome cover. Well done - and your other stuff on You Tube is brilliant too!
Jonas - Mar 23, 2011 01:59:24 — Emerson hasn't been considered a legitimate composer, but I think one mark of a good composer is when other talented musicians can take the work and shape it like the Jad & Den Quintet has done here.  The only other successful artist I know of (and I've admittedly been out of the loop for a few years) that even attempts ELP is Jordan Rudess, but he basically duplicates ELP's work, rather than expands on it or re-styles it.  The Jad & Den Quintet is a whole different style from ELP, and I think they made Trilogy work very nicely for that style. Thanks for your kind words, and for visiting my site!
Jeff Rickard - Apr 21, 2011 11:55:26 — I have followed ELP for many years and whilst their style has dated the inherent musicality of their major pieces stands up well. The evidence for this is apparent in Jad & Dens interpretation of Trilogy. What a great performance. I hope that they try some others soon. Thanks

Jonas - Apr 22, 2011 12:19:48 — Jeff, what ELP works would you like to see re-done? As a young drummer, I often dreamt of finding other musicians (keyboardist and bassist) who could play pieces such as Tarkus and Karn Evil 9. Jordan Rudess is one keyboardist who successfully re-created Tarkus in its entirety, and his band actually seems to play it more accurately than ELP. But those musicians are so hard to come by. I struggled physically to keep up with Palmer when I was a lad playing along with the vinyl. My chops wouldn't be up to it today, but I think I'd be willing to dedicate a few months in the gym if I could get a chance to play these two works with some other good talent. I'm sure I could find that talent here in Vegas - the entertainment capital of the world. Realistically, though, my glory days are over, so I think I'll just sit back and let Jad & Den entertain and amaze me with their talent. Thanks, Jeff, for visiting my site and for your comments!
Jeff Rickard - Apr 27, 2011 12:36:24 — 'Take a Pebble' seems to be ready-made for Jad&Den to cover. Am sure there are others but would need some rehearsals to work out. I've heard Jordan Rudess do Tarkus but it seems a bit clinical for me - Emerson plays with that bit of grunge that seems to define the music. They're all amazing players and think quite differently to most. Get those chops back and search out some talent - sounds like you still have the hunger. Good luck Jonas. Cheers.
Jonas - Apr 27, 2011 08:11:50 — Jad?  Den?  Got it?  Take a Pebble.  And don't forget to give Jeff some credit for the suggestion!
Chris - Jul 8, 2012 12:24:47 — Just herd this for the first time. Where can I buy the records?
Jonas - Jul 8, 2012 12:44:44 — Dunno, but you can contact Jad and Den on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jaddenquintet (Speaking French might help.)
Bob Brodax - Jan 11, 2013 04:32:29 — As a musician, I especiallyam impressed with Jad & Dens rendition of Trilogy. I think that they should also try Genesis' Fifth of Firth and try putting that together for flight on You Tube............................BB
BB - Jan 11, 2013 04:46:46 — And also Chicago' cut of Dialogue part 1 and 2.................let it bip.

You got something to say about this?  (And remember what Joan Rivers said: "If you can't say something nice, let's hear it!")
