Caffiene vs. Alcohol

According to an Associated Press story, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warning letters on November 17, 2010 to four companies - Phusion Projects, Charge Beverages Corp., New Century Brewing Co., and United Brands Company Inc. - saying their beverages' combination of caffeine and alcohol can lead to a "wide-awake drunk."  The agency called the caffeine an "unsafe food additive."  The four companies decided to pull their beverages from stores or reformulate them to remove caffeine or other stimulants after the FDA's ruling.

Brilliant!  We don't mind if people get blind-stinkin' drunk, as long as they don't stay awake while they do it.

I avoid caffiene as much as I can - I agree it's bad - but this almost seems like we're throwing the baby out so the bath water doesn't get dirty.  Or is it just me...?
