Boycott of Girl Scout Cookies

In 2011, a Girl Scout organization in Colorado decided it would be okay for boys to join the Girl Scouts instead of the Boy Scouts.  Many people oppose that decision.

Today, this video shows a veteran Girl Scout - Taylor, as some have identified her - politely, calmly, and reasonably voicing her objection to allowing boys into the Girl Scouts.

What caught my attention more than Taylor's video are the vicious remarks expressed by those who disagree with her.  Read the comments on this page, for example, and watch some other opposing videos.

I support Taylor's argument, and I'll join the boycott of Girl Scout cookies (not that I ever bought them anyway, but...).

Gender is not determined by an individual's feelings.  Gender is determined by chromosomes.  There's not a doctor in the world who can change those chromosomes, so there is really no such thing as a "transgender".  You are what you are regardless of how you feel.

"If you call a dog's tail a leg, how many legs would the dog have?"

The answer to Abraham Lincoln's favorite riddle is four.  It doesn't matter what you call a dog's tail, it's still a tail.

Although this is not a racial issue, some have equated it to that, so this quote applies:

"It's not the color of your skin we object to; it's the color of your attitude."

Those of us who support traditional moral values are routinely called bigots.  We are accused of being filled with hate.  I see no evidence that Taylor hates anyone.  She has a valid argument, one that's been supported since the inception of the Girl Scouts.  But some people want to change tradition based on their own selfish, personal feelings.  They seem to have no regard for the feelings of the majority.  That's one of the reasons America is in its decline.

I would disagree with HonestGirlScouts.com on the abortion issue.  I oppose abortion, would never have one, nor would I perform one on another person.  But I believe the decision to have an aborttion should be left to the patient and her doctor, not the Girl Scouts or the government.

I would, however, agree with HonestGirlScouts.com that sex education should not be part of the Girl Scout cirriculum, and should be left to the parents/guardians.

If you agree with Taylor, fine.  If you disagree with Taylor, that's fine, too.  I would just ask that you express your disagreement with the same reason, logic, courtesy, and composure Taylor did, and refrain from the emotionally-charged name-calling.

You deserve to know what Girl Scout cookies fund.

G - Feb 23, 2012 12:44:19 — So "G" submits a four page, 154 line, 2,256 word, 13,352 character message which originally filled this space.  It was, for the most part, fictional.  He/she - I don't know which - included his/her email address, and asked that I "please don't share it", not realizing that his/her message would be immediately posted here.  You see, I give people the benefit of the doubt.  I'll let you post whatever you want, and I don't need to review it or approve it before it goes live.  I do get a copy, and if I see that it's something inappropriate, I'll consider taking action (edit or delete it).  So after I read this novel (which took all the energy I had because he/she kept babbling on about the exceptions and not the rule), I removed his/her email address, as he/she requested, and reformatted the message so it would be easier for others to read.  No sooner had I finished that when I discovered he/she had emailed me and asked me to remove the entire post.  I would really like to leave the post here becaause it's so typical of someone who is that confused about himself/herself to try to convince the rest of the world that they are the ones who are confused.

Suffice it to say that G considers himself/herself a transgender, and was opposed to my belief that he/she is what God made him/her, not what he/she chooses to be based on his/her feelings.

"All I ask is that everyone be given the freedom to be authentic and true to themselves...", G wrote.  I don't have a problem in the world with that, except that when you are being dishonest to me and the rest of society, and when you try to force society to accept your twisted, confused masquerade, it becomes a significant problem.

I remember a bass drummer in a high school band who once insisted that the entire band, except for him, was out of step.  When you are clearly confused about what and who you are, you cannot expect society to reverse their beliefs and say "We can disregard the physical examination; we can disregard the chromosomes; we can disregard thousands of years of tradition; you, child, can be whatever gender you feel like being."

When LGBTs come out of the closet, nobody cares.  Come out of the bedroom, if you must.  But when you come out of the house and into the streets, and want to have public parades and festivals to celebrate the fact that you choose a devious lifestyle, how can you not expect society to oppose it?  What G tried to do with his/her rant was confuse the issue and suggest that it's me who is confused about what gender is.  Everyone knows what a male is and what a female is.  We're also aware of the rare exceptions.

But the Girl Scout issue is not about the LGBT community.  From the evidence, Bobby Montoya, the seven-year-old Colorado boy who wants to join the Girl Scouts, is not an exception.  He's a boy - no one disputes that, not even his own mother.  It would appear that he's a very confused boy, and that confusion may seriously disrupt his ability to live a normal, yes normal, healthy life.

G wrote repeatedly in his message that my beliefs don't necessarily make me a bigot.  What I believe he/she was suggesting is that I am a bigot.  He/she was just considerate enough not to call me one.  But like so many others, he/she can't seem to accept the fact that some people simply disagree with him/her.

Dictionary.com defines bigot as "a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion."  Clearly, I am tolerant of everyone in sociey, no matter how different they are from me.  Tolerant is one thing; accepting is totally different.  My beliefs are based on the Bible.  What I object to is any group trying to redefine a tradition established by God, a tradition that is thousands of years old, a tradition that is based on morality, for the purpose of getting tax benefits and free health care coverage.

So, as requested, I've removed G's rant.  I replaced his/hers my own, but I've left my original response (below).  I've gone on longer than I wanted to, and allowed myself to get off the subject, which is that a boy wants to join a girls' organization despite the fact that he's not wanted there.  He wants to disregard the girls' wishes, and impose his own selfish wishes and beliefs on them.

I thank God that my daughter isn't a Girl Scout.
Jonas - Feb 23, 2012 02:20:19 — I can sum up your novel this way: You are muddying the water, and then trying to explain why I should believe the water is crystal clear, clean, and safe for human consumption.

You're taking the rare exceptions - the 0.2% according to your numbers - and trying to use those examples to justify changing the reality of gender as society has always accepted it.  In those rare cases where a physical examination can't determine gender, the XY sex-determination system can.  There are extremely rare cases where neither the physical examination nor the XY sex-determination system can definitively determine gender.  But this story isn't about that.  It's about a boy who selfishly wants to be in a girls' organization, and the current members' valid opposition to that.  On the core issue, I agree with Taylor, and I'm not going to drink the Kool-Aid or buy the cookies.

Thanks for visiting!
Joshua J Pinaula - Mar 18, 2012 11:32:37 — Wow! The Girl Scouts are WAY more progressive then I thought! That's totally AWESOME! I'm so glad to see a female organization that's furthering the world. We are human first! Go Girl Scouts!

You got something to say about this?  (And remember what Joan Rivers said: "If you can't say something nice, let's hear it!")

NOTE: A message sent through this form will not be sent privately to Jonas.  It will be posted on this page for the entire world to see.  Any responses will also be posted on this page, and you will not receive personal responses.  If you would like to send a private message to Jonas, send a message through the contact page.  He can ignore it much faster that way. (Just kidding!)
