Texas Judge Tonya Parker's Selfish Application of Law

Categories: Opinion

Texas Judge Tonya Parker
Texas Judge Tonya Parker refuses to uphold the same-sex marriage law that applies to everyone, both heterosexuals and homosexuals, equally and fairly.
"Texas Judge Tonya Parker cannot legally marry a woman in her state, so she refuses to perform any marriage ceremonies until there is equality," according to this February 24, 2012 ABC News/Good Morning America story.

"'I don't perform marriage ceremonies because we are in a state that does not have marriage equality and until it does, I'm not going to partially apply the law to one group of people that doesn't apply to another group of people,' Parker said in a video of the Tuesday discussion."

I'm not a lawyer or a judge, but it seems to me that laws against same-sex marriage apply to both heterosexuals and homosexuals, therefore, there is no inequality.

Judge Parker continues, "'And it's kind of oxymoronic for me to perform ceremonies that can't be performed for me, so I'm not going to do it.'"

The reality is that the marriage ceremony can be performed for her, as long as she complies with the law.

It's amazing to me that someone with "higher education" can't seem to comprehend the simple truth: There is no discrimination.  The laws apply equally to everyone.  So this judge who is appointed to serve the people decides that her selfish, personal desires are more important than thousands of years of moral tradition.

This is exactly why we need to allow discrimination in America.  In cases like this where the law is clear and applies to everyone equally and fairly, people like Parker simply cannot be trusted to represent the people and uphold the law.

Douglas  - Mar 10, 2012 03:55:42 — I am appauled at the decision of this bigotted judge by not standing by the laws of the people that elected her to the bench. She needs to be debenched and fired. She would jail a minister that would not perform a wedding ceremony for gay people, but now she wants it the other way. If she wont pe ...more
Jonas - Mar 10, 2012 09:56:26 — Thanks for the comment and support!  She, like most judges, is not there to serve the people.  She is there to exert her will and power over others.  Welkome to Amerika!
Tedro - Jul 19, 2013 10:09:43 — So gay marriage is immoral?
Jonas - Jul 20, 2013 12:46:49 — Don't confuse two elements. Homosexuality is immoral, according to the Bible. A marriage is between one man and one woman, as established by thousands of years of tradition. So if you have a gay man and woman who are married, it doesn't make the marriage immoral.
Bound and Gagged  - Dec 25, 2013 01:16:57 — Toyna Parker has a chip on each of her small shoulders. She hates straight people and she hates whites. She tramples first amendment rights by using prior restraint. This is a fact. She carries water for the big white law firms that paid to get her elected. Another fact. How can a judge who  ...more
Jonas - Dec 25, 2013 01:52:25 — I agree - Texans DO deserve better. Americans deserve better. But this is America today. It's not just Texas. There are judges all across the country who are bigoted and biased. They routinely ignore the will of the people they serve. I recently witnessed one Clark County Justice of the Peace, Eric  ...more
Jonas - Dec 25, 2013 01:54:38 — BTW, Bound and Gagged, Merry Christmas and thanks for writing! (Sorry, you got me all fired up!)
Edoardo - Jan 24, 2015 08:22:06 — The homofobics have lost at this point their so stupid battle against the american future. Texas has always been the last state for the civil and human rights since 1863. Shame on it! So ridiculous! Creeply.
Jonas - Jan 24, 2015 12:15:17 — Thanks, Edoardo!  It's ironic you should use the word "homofobics" [sic] and "stupid" in the same sentence.  (Not to mention the word "creeply" at the end.)

Gays want to marry for benefits - life insurance, medical coverages, tax benefits, etc.& ...more
Dallasite - Mar 30, 2017 04:44:50 — The judge is in no way required to perform marriages, for all of the people claiming that she is breaking the law. Performing marriages is a discretionary function that judges can choose to or not to do. Figured I'd add some actual facts to this conversation.
Jonas - Mar 30, 2017 05:58:18 — I can't dispute your claim, Dallasite, that "The judge is in no way required to perform marriages..." and "Performing marriages is a discretionary function..."  Are you referring to Texas state law or federal law?  Can you provide a reference to the code or statutes?...more
