In Defense of Rush

Categories: Politics

Television screen-capture of Sandra Fluke at an address to House Democratic members in a press conference staged to look like a Congressional hearing in which Ms. Fluke testified that contraceptive costs for Georgetown University women over a three-year law school period could reach $3,000.I generally can't bring myself to call any woman a slut.  I won't say that about Sandra Fluke or the women she represents, if any.

But in defense of Rush Limbaugh, who recently referred to Fluke as a slut and prostitute, I have to consider the facts.

I don't know anything about Fluke or her lifestyle.  But based on her recent address to House Democratic members in a press conference staged to look like a Congressional hearing in which Ms. Fluke testified that contraceptive costs for Georgetown University women over a three-year law school period could reach $3,000 ($1,000 per year), it would seem to me that Rush had a valid point.

A quick look online shows that condoms cost about $0.50 each.  $1,000 worth of condoms would be 2,000 condoms.  Who needs that many condoms?  Assuming a person uses one condom each time they have sex, that would be a sex frequency of more than 38 times per week, or 5.5 times each day!  I'd have to question the morality of any unmarried person who has sex that often.  Assuming most college students are unmarried, that doesn't look good.  And since Ms. Fluke is representing women, that really looks bad.

The World English Dictionary defines slut as "an immoral woman".  Immoral is defined as "transgressing accepted moral rules" and "sexually dissolute; profligate or promiscuous".  Does an unmarried woman who has sex on average more than five times each day not fit this definition?

I think Rush hit the nail on the head.  Unfortunately, saying it on America's number one talk radio program was what caused such a stir.  Rush is a target of liberals, and any chance they can get to ruffle his feathers, they'll take.  The reality is that most of America agrees with Limbaugh's point, but they have been conditioned to show more restraint and use less offensive language, at least in public.  In private, however, they would agree that "slut" may not be inappropriate.

What Ms. Fluke and the women at Georgetown University do in between classes is their business.  But they shouldn't be surprised or offended when someone calls a spade a spade.  And they certainly shouldn't expect anyone else to pay for it - not the insurance companies, not the taxpayers, not Georgetown University, not the Catholic Church, not even those they hook up with.  If you're that promiscuous, you've got to stand on your own two feet.
