Chi Omega: Better People

Categories: Opinion

December 9, 2012

I'm sorry the Penn State Chi Omega sorority has apologized for the portrayal of Mexicans in the photo that has recently circulated on the Internet of members wearing sombreros and holding "offensive" signs.

When will Mexicans apologize for their offensive portrayal of people in other cultures, such as the the Soviet athlete portrayed regularly on the Estrella TV game show ¡A que no puedes!?

But who cares about Soviets, right?  After all, the Soviet Union doesn't exist any more, does it?

There are many Russians, Ukrainians, and others who were born and raised in the Soviet Union.  While the CCCP is gone, the pride of much of the the Soviet culture, including athletic accomplishments, remains.  Forgive me, but I can't think of an Olympic sporting event in which the Soviets didn't whip the Mexicans.

So, frankly, I don't think the Chi Omegas have anything to apologize for...unless, of course, they just want to be better people.
