Tribute to Dave Wallace, Jr.

Categories: ReligionMusic

2012 was the toughest year of my life.  For the first time in my life, I was laid off from my job.  I had been with the company 12 years.  Ouch.

My mother passed away in May.  Soon after, her brother passed away.  Artist LeRoy Neiman, whom I considered a friend, also passed away in June.  Obama was re-elected.  How much worse could it get?!

But one loss that was particularly stinging was that of my friend Dave Wallace, Jr.  At age 47, he died unexpectedly of a heart attack.

Among many other things, Dave, Jr. was a singer, and a great one at that.  I first heard him sing at Mountain View Seventh-day Adventist Church in Las Vegas where his father is associate pastor, and I've been a member since 2007.  Dave, Jr. would occasionally return to sing, and I had looked forward to the day when I could work as his sound tech.

I was excited when he was scheduled to sing at the Extreme Rescue 2011 (read Extreme Rescue 2011 - "Mighty to Save"), where I had been asked to run sound.  Unfortunately, due to delays and scheduling conflicts, he was forced to withdraw at the last minute.  I was disappointed.

On Saturday, October 22, 2011, Dave, Jr. had been invited to sing for the Mountain View Church worship services.  I was the scheduled sound tech.  I had waited years for that day.

At the Friday night sound check, I was nervous.  Dave, Jr. had an awesome gift, and I didn't want to interfere with God's message via his performance.  But he was professional and easy to work with.  He had specific requests, but wasn't overly demanding.  The sound check went well.

At the worship services the next day, he sang Marvin Sapp's Never Would Have Made It.  Our video production team was at its peak (thanks to former Mountain View Associate Pastor Brett Hadley and his son Colby), so we got a decent video and audio recording.  As far as I know, it's the only good quality recording of Dave, Jr. singing.

I could be wrong, but somehow, I don't think Dave, Jr. would have been unhappy with this message being the only one on YouTube.
