Chivalry Never Died

Categories: Wisdom

Chivalry never died. The gentleman in most men did. Being male is a matter of birth. Being a man is a matter of age. But, being a gentleman is a matter of choice.

I haven't been able to definitively confirm the origin of this work, but I suspect it comes from these Knights of the Free Company.

Alex McDougall - Dec 22, 2013 11:08:07 — I remember school days, where students of my school would be such gentlemen. They would open doors for people and give up seats and all sorts like that. When they go out with their girlfriends they would pull the chair out at a restaurant, hold hands, be respectful and well mannered. If someone foll ...more

Joel - Jan 24, 2014 07:13:44 — Thank you for reminding me that I am accountable to my wife and my savior, Jesus Christ, that I will treat her with respect and make sure she knows that I love her with all my heart.
Jonas - Jan 24, 2014 07:25:20 — I think your wife will appreciate that (so will JC).  Thanks for visiting!
Sheryl - May 10, 2014 05:40:36 — There is so much more to being a gentleman than extending your "Southern" accent, opening doors and pulling out chairs. There is a simple dignity and honesty that is always just beneath the surface...but never goes away and is never worn on one's sleeve as though to be seen as proud. Whil ...more
Jonas - May 10, 2014 08:51:11 — Okay, that rules me out!  LOL  Very well thought out and written, Sheryl.  Thanks much!  Guys, the bar has been raised.
Jonas - May 12, 2014 10:06:44 — After thinking about Sheryl's contribution, I was reminded of a conversation I had with a friend a few years ago.  Living in Vegas, I often find myself in crowded situations.  I noticed that some men take their partner by the hand and lead them through the crowd.  Others politely gest ...more

M Raghavan - Feb 17, 2015 10:03:41 — Agreed; chivalry has not died. It lives on in the hearts of soulful men who recognize how it is the true calling of every man.
Jonas - Feb 25, 2015 12:55:03 — Out of curiosity, I looked up the word "chivalry" in the dictionary (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/chivalry?s=t).  In all definitions, chivalry refers to knights, often medieval knighthood, and not to ordinary men.
Paul - May 9, 2015 11:56:22 — Chivalry was once an important part of being a civilized culture, for chivalry to survive the 21st century it needs to be redefined. As a man I believe the hope and responsibility belongs to feminists. A true feminist believes in gender equality, sadly too many sexist women tarnish their cause. T ...more
Jonas - May 10, 2015 08:19:40 — Thanks, Paul!  You may be right.

Call me old school, but I kinda like males being male and females being female.  (I'm stoked when a lady holds the door open for me.)
