He That Knows/Doesn't Know

Categories: Wisdom

He that doesn't know and doesn't know that he doesn't know is a fool, shun him.

He that doesn't know but knows that he doesn't know is simple, teach him.

He that knows but doesn't know that he knows is asleep, wake him.

He that knows and knows that he knows is wise, follow him.

Dan - Sep 1, 2016 02:03:02 — My correction of your version would be to substitute "who" for "that" and ";" for "," He who doesn't know and doesn't know that he doesn't know is a fool; shun him. He who doesn't know but knows that he doesn't know is simple; teach him. He who knows but doesn't know that he knows is asleep; wake him. He who knows and knows that he knows is wise; follow him. ----------------- My version would be: He who doesn't know and thinks that he knows is a fool; shun him. He who doesn't know and knows that he doesn't know is humble; seek his company for he may actually be wise or he will become wise. He who knows but doesn't know that he knows is asleep; wake him and teach him more.
Jonas - Sep 1, 2016 08:54:18 — I agree with you, Dan.  I'm guessing the origin is Chinese, so I posted it as I received it.  But your suggestions make sense.  Thanks for your feedback!

Homa Tanin - Feb 3, 2017 03:19:35 — knowledge is a vast ocean. As much as you learn it seems like a drop of that ocean for wise people. So, the person you know that he knows, but he denies that he knows is more awake then you.
Samiuddin - Nov 22, 2019 07:50:16 — I read it some 30 years ago, in English as well as its translation in Urdu language, very interesting fact till this time there is a large number of those who don't know that they don't know contrary to it few are wiser than others and serving the humanity at large.
