Brother to Brother - Gino Vannelli and the Portland Band

By Gino Vannelli: The Man and His Music!!!ยท / YouTube / June 17, 2013

In 1976, I started my most serious musical education at a school that was heavily focused on jazz, a field I was not too familiar with.  In the percussion ensemble, we were given music to the "War Suite" from The Gist of the Gemini.  That was my introduction to Gino Vannelli, and I immediately recognized him and his brothers as some of the best musicians of the time.

If you don't recognize the name, you would surely recognize the hits.  I Just Wanna Stop (1978) and Living Inside Myself (1981) are two of the most popular.

A year or so after my introduction to Gino, he and his brothers were touring and were to be at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky, where I had also studied jazz.  I bought tickets and arrived more than an hour early.  Seating at that time was not reserved, but "first-come, first-served", and I wanted to be up close.  The doors were not yet open comprar cialis 20 mg when I arrived, and it was a cold winter night.  There was a foot or so of snow on the ground - quite a bit for Louisville.

The concert was scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m.  From the time I arrived, others also arrived and stood in line waiting to get in where it was warm and dry.  7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 8:30...we were all beginning to get a little restless.

At some point, an announcement was made.  Although the band had already flown in, the equipment was travelling by truck, and would be arriving from Kansas.  The storm had shut down the roads, and the truck was late.  Gino, we were told, wanted a good sound check.  The quality was important to him, and we would not be allowed into the arena until the sound check was finished.

We waited.  Some started to leave.  Then more and more.  By 11:00 p.m., the doors finally opened and there were only about 100 people left in line.  We went in and took our seats in the first few rows in this relatively empty 15,000-seat arena.

Because the audience had been reduced to such a small number, Gino was able to communicate with us on a very personal level.  Gino and his band performed one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen by any performer.  That was a show well worth the wait!

Since then, I've seen Gino several times - in large arenas, small clubs, and at his performances in Vegas.  Gino is, in my opinion, the most under-rated male singer in pop/rock history.

It's interesting to hear how the music changes slightly with different musicians.  This recent video is the title track from the 1978 Brother to Brother CD, performed with a more jazzy flavor.

J - May 31, 2014 08:54:33 — I remember my boyfriend at the time took me to see Spirogyra. He gave me a CD to listen to first so I could get familiar with the group. My Mother asked me where all the words to the songs were. I guess she couldn't understand why I would want to go to a concert where the band doesn't sing. Actually, I just wanted to go on the date. Too funny. This is a great video, and you are right,Gino has a truly wonderful voice. You definately got your money's worth standing in the cold.
Donna Absher - Sep 5, 2014 12:52:21 — I love Gino Vannelli's music!!! I have seen him five times in the last year and a half. It is amazing. Everything is new and relevant and so well done. He is a master.
