The Shocking 'Mad Flag' Poster

Categories: Humor

By Al Jaffee / Mad Magazine / June 1, 1971

I remember grocery shopping with my mother when I was a boy, and asking her to buy me the current issue of Mad Magazine.  Until then, I had never seen the contents.  But judging by the cover, it seemed like an interesting read for someone my age.

I was surprised at my mother's response.  She told me she would have to look through it first, apparently to make sure it was not unsuitable for a boy my age.

She checked it out, saw that it was good, clean fun, gave the green light, and I was hooked to Mad from then on.

The most memorable issue was the 1971 "Special Number Five" that contained a poster insert - "The Shocking 'Mad Flag' Poster".  I hung that poster on my bedroom wall, even though the poster contained words I had never seen or heard before.  None were in the dictionary, but in time, I learned each of the derogatory terms, and also learned not to call people those names.

It was funny.

It still is.

But as "shocking" as it was in 1971, it seems to have been more acceptable then than it would be today.  In '71, we had the right of free speech.  We're not living in the 70's anymore.

I think the poster needs to be revived, so we can all laugh at ourselves again.

"I WILL PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS WHEN IT IS ONE NATION UNDER GOD WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL INCLUDING KIKES, WOPS, SPICS, NIGGERS, WASPS, ETC."

I will pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands when it is one nation under God with liberty and justice for all including kikes, wops, spics, niggers, wasps, etc.

Jonas - Dec 31, 2014 01:09:43 — You're right, Al.

I wonder why they left out "crackers" (not the same as a WASP).  Discrimination, no doubt.
