ELP - An International Collaboration

Categories: Music

By Jeanie Flowers / YouTube

I got out of music when I realized there are extraordinarily talented musicians in the world, and I wasn't one of them.

Three of those musicians formed Emerson, Lake & Palmer in 1970.  I didn't listen to them until the mid-70s.  "Karn Evil 9" performed live on Welcome Back My Friends... caught my attention.  ELP became one of my three favorite bands - Chicago being the first, and later, Rick Wakeman led me to Yes.

If you know ELP, you'll know that Emerson was a great composer as well as an exceptional keyboardist.  He was not only talented, but innovative.  Using modified Hammond organs and extensive use of Moog synthesizers, Emerson created symphonic-like sounds that were difficult for others to duplicate.  That along with the complexity of his compositions made it virtually impossible for ELP music to be "covered."  Until recently.

The first ELP piece I heard accurately covered was "Tarkus" recorded a few years back by keyboardist Jordan Rudess.

More recently, young Rachel Flowers has been attracting attention for her performances of Emerson's music.  I knew of Miss Flowers, and recognized her extrordinary talent.

So let's cut to the chase...  This morning, I stumbled across The Endless Enigma - An International Collaboration.  Seeing that Miss Flowers was on the piano, I gave it a listen.  I was absolutely blown away, not only at Miss Flowers talent, but all the musicians involved.

I had to hear more, so I found Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression, Part 1 - An International Collaboration, something I didn't think anyone could ever duplicate.  These are the musicians that prompted me to look for a new career!

So these two videos are my cover of the month.
