Don't Stop the Hatin'!

Don't Stop the Hatin'!

Hate is a God-given emotion.

For years, I've felt that hate served a purpose; that hate was sometimes a good thing.  But I didn't really know why.  I knew there were things God Himself hated.  So why do people keep telling us to "Stop the hatin'!"

The answer wasn't too difficult to find.

The overall message of the Bible, of course, is that we love others as we love ourselves.  There are dozens of Bible verses about hate.  Here's one:

"Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him."  —1 John 3:15

This one is more powerful:

"Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar.  For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen."  —1 John 4:20

And yet, I remember this:

"a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.  —Ecclesiastes 3:8

So why the conflict?

There is no conflict.  The distinction is this: What is it you hate?

It is wrong to hate other people, but it is good to hate evil.

"Let those who love the LORD hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked."  —Psalm 97:10

"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good."  —Romans 12:9

"To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech."  —Proverbs 8:13

So what is evil?

Evil must be those things God hates!

Proverbs 6:16-19 (NIV):

16There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17   haughty eyes,
      a lying tongue,
      hands that shed innocent blood,
18   a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19   a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Based on this, do you think rioting might be evil?  Looting?  Assault?  Battery?  Murder?  Robbery?  Disrderly conduct?  Vandalism?  Profanity?

Next time you want to tell someone to "Stop the hatin'!", I would encourage you to first look in the mirror.  Maybe it really isn't your skin color or the fact that you're an illegal immigrant.  Maybe...just maybe it's your behavior.  If it is, you deserve all the hatin' you can get.  When your behavior changes, maybe then you'll be welcomed and loved.

"If you can't say something nice, let's hear it!"   — Joan Rivers

You got something to say about Don't Stop the Hatin'!?
