Hot Fun In the Summertime

Categories: Music

June 23, 2020

It gets hot in Las Vegas (in more ways than one).  You've probably heard.

Every summer, one of my favorite songs - Hot Fun in the Summertime - starts going through my head.  It was made popular in 1968 by Sly and the Family Stone (written and produced by Sly Stone).  In 1992, it was covered by the Beach Boys on their "Summer of Paradise" album.  I like both versions, and couldn't decide which I liked most, so I mixed my favorite parts from each into one version - the Max mix.

Sly and the Family Stone single sleeve

Sly and the Family Stone

Sly Stone - vocals, piano
Freddie Stone - vocals, guitar
Larry Graham - vocals, bass guitar
Rose Stone - vocals
Cynthia Robinson - trumpet
Jerry Martini - saxophone
Greg Errico - drums

The Beach Boys 'Summer in Paradise' album cover

The Beach Boys

Mike Love – vocals, executive producer
Carl Wilson – vocals
Al Jardine – vocals
Bruce Johnston – vocals, keyboards on Slow Summer Dancin’ (One Summer Night) and possibly Under the Boardwalk
Plus many more!

This mix is nothin' to brag about.  Both versions I worked with were mp3s to start out with, so not a lot of audio quality there.  Apparently, neither band used a click-track, which made synchronization a bit of a challenge.  But I did it for fun, and I don't really care about perfection anymore.  And it's a great song, which will surely overshadow my flaws (not sayin' there are any, but...).
